Severe Storm Precautions

As if normal computer problems were not enough storms also pose unique risks.  The two main issues that affect computers during storms are

1.  Lightning and Surges

2.  Brownouts and outages.

With both  we recommend at least a surge suppressor but if budged allows a UPS or uninterruptible power supply is much better.   The UPS works by regulating the voltage a computer gets delivered to it.  Too much or little power and this device is able to switch to an internal battery to keep the computer operating safely.

These devices are great at keeping a computer from rebooting each time the power flickers.  They also give you time to save documents should the power be out for an extended time.

Although surge suppressors and UPS devices are good, nothing out performs unplugging a computer during strong lightning.  Make sure you also disconnect the network cable from the back  if conditions are bad.

That said, sure as I am typing today, the next spring storm season countless computers will have various parts destroyed by lightning.  Things like power supplies, network cards, and any combination of other parts will need replaced.  At Mac and Pc Guys we are able to fix any of these issues quickly to get you back on track.  If you think you may have had a part fail, or just want to discuss more about power issues give us a call.
